Last month, an average of 18 people lost their lives in road accidents in the country every day. This information was informed in a press release of Road Safety Foundation on Thursday.
The organization said that 562 people were killed and 549 injured in 441 road accidents in the country in May. Among the dead, 83 women and 66 children.
According to the notification, 217 people were killed in 228 motorcycle accidents, which is 38.61 percent of the total number of deaths. Motorcycle accident rate is 51.70 percent. 147 pedestrians were killed in the accident, which is 26.15 percent of the total fatalities. 86 people, i.e. 15.30 percent, were killed by vehicle drivers and assistants.
At this time, 34 people were killed and 16 people were injured in 8 boat accidents. 4 killed and 1 injured in 5 railway accidents. Apart from this, six people were killed and 31 injured in two incidents of hastily disembarking from the ferry at Shimulia-Banglabazar Ghat during Eid home journey.
Most accidents and fatalities occurred in Dhaka division. 144 people were killed in 115 accidents in this section. The least in Mymensingh Division. 27 people were killed in 26 accidents. As a single district, Chittagong district has had the highest number of accidents and fatalities. 41 people were killed in 32 accidents in this district. The least in Panchagarh district. 3 accidents occurred but no one was injured.
Earlier last April 452 people were killed in 397 accidents. An average of 15.06 people were killed per day. However, an average of 18.12 people were killed per day in May. As a result, the death toll has increased by 20.31 percent.
