2 brothers died after bathing in the river in Dinajpur

Two brothers died after going down to bathe in the Atrai river of Dinajpur's Khansama upazila. The accident took place on Wednesday (June 3) afternoon in the Kalirbazar Ghat area of Khamarpara Union of the upazila.

The deceased are Manna Islam (45) and Saddam Hossain (32), sons of deceased Siraj Uddin, residents of Mirpur-11 area of the capital.

According to family and local sources, on Sunday (May 31), Saddam Hossain came with his family from Dhaka to visit his in-laws' house in Champatali village of Chirirbandar upazila of Dinajpur. On Wednesday (June 3) morning, family members including two brothers went to a litchi orchard in Zoar area of Khansama upazila to buy litchi. On the way back after buying litchi, four people reached Kalirbazar Ghat and went to bathe in Atrai river together.

Manna Islam's two sons Sajeeb (16) and Noor Alam (12) somehow managed to come out of the river at one stage of bathing, but Manna Islam and his brother Saddam Hossain drowned in the deep water.

Locals immediately started rescue operations after receiving information about the incident. Later, when the fire service was informed, a team of them reached the spot and started the rescue operation. The body of Manna Islam was recovered at 2:15 pm with the joint efforts of fire service and locals. Later, the diving team from Rangpur recovered Saddam Hussain's body at 3:35 PM.

Locals claim that although the river water is relatively low at present, a deep hole has been created at the bottom of the river due to the extraction of sand by dredgers in the Kalirbazar Ghat area. It is believed that two brothers died due to sinking in that hole.

Abul Kalam Azad, team leader of Khansama Fire Service and Civil Defense said that a team of fire service reached the spot and started rescue work after receiving the news. Later, with the help of the diving team, the other body was also recovered.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khansama police station Abdul Baset Sarkar said, the police went to the spot immediately after receiving the information. Two bodies have already been recovered. If any complaint is found in this incident, necessary legal action will be taken subject to investigation.
