Iran will try to impose a service fee on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz in return for ensuring security, not transit tolls. The country's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi gave this information in an interview with semi-official Iranian media “Mehr” on Thursday (June 4).
He said Iran “is not trying to collect any money for transit fees, transit duties or transit rights.”
Kazem said Iran would instead seek compensation for services performed off Oman's coast, including navigational assistance, search and rescue, security and protection services, and environmental cleanup services in case of pollution.
He said the strategic waterway “lies entirely within the territorial waters of Iran and Oman. According to international law and the law of the sea,” those governments have sovereignty over the strait.
The deputy foreign minister said the measures being drafted would be in line with international law, but admitted that 'they may not be 100% satisfactory to some countries.'
