Countering the spread of misinformation and misinformation is a major challenge: Information Minister


Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan said, “Technology is a boon to modern civilization on the one hand, but on the other hand it has become a major problem.”

He said, “Intentionally spreading misinformation and misinformation, especially using artificial intelligence (AI) and various social media, is now a major national and global challenge.”

The Minister said these things when the High Commissioner of Australia appointed to Bangladesh, Susan Ryle, came for a courtesy call at the Information and Broadcasting Minister's office at the Secretariat on Thursday (June 4).

During the meeting, the Minister informed the Australian High Commissioner in detail about the various people-oriented activities undertaken by the current government for the welfare of the common people, including Family Card and Farmer Card, and its economic importance.

Zahir Uddin Swapan told the High Commissioner that the government has taken the initiative to form an independent and strong 'Mass Media Commission' by emphasizing on qualitative and institutional reform of the country's media sector. The cooperation of the Australian Government is sought by expressing its interest in utilizing the knowledge, experience and technical expertise available in Australia in the formation of this commission and in the modernization of the media.

The meeting also discussed ways to prevent misuse of artificial intelligence and successfully counter misinformation and rumors spread on social media.

Australian High Commissioner Susan Ryle praised the current government's social welfare initiatives. At the same time, he assured Australia's overall technical and technical cooperation in dealing with the negative effects of information technology and forming a media commission in Bangladesh.

During the meeting, relevant senior officials of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Australian High Commission in Dhaka were present.
