In Sadar Upazila of Narsingdi, a young woman (18) tried to commit suicide by hanging herself in anger after a settlement proposal was made in exchange of money instead of marriage in the local arbitration meeting on rape charges. It has been alleged that a policeman was also present in the meeting along with local BNP leaders.
The incident took place in Sonatala Chakpara area of ​​Chinishpur Union of Sadar Upazila on Friday (May 22) afternoon.
Currently, the victim is undergoing treatment in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) of a private hospital in the capital.
The victim's family alleged that the girl was married in Shibpur upazila near Narsingdi. After the marriage, the neighboring private car driver Naim started harassing her in various ways and tempting her for marriage. At one point Naim brought the girl away from her husband's family. After that, he raped her several times for a long time with the promise of marriage.
Residents said that an arbitration meeting was held in Sonatala Chakpara area on Friday afternoon regarding the issue of rape. District BNP Sports Affairs Secretary and Chinishpur Union BNP Convenor Aulad Hossain Molla, District BNP Organizing Secretary Mazharul Haque Titu, Forest and Environment Affairs Secretary Moazzem Hossain Khoka, Union BNP Joint Convener Amjad Hossain and Jubo Dal leader Jahangir were present there. SI md. It is alleged that a policeman named Yunus was present.
The victim's family claims that the BNP leaders and local leaders present at the arbitration did not decide to marry the victim with the accused, but instead, to cover up the rape incident, first offered a settlement of Tk 20,000, then Tk 30,000 and finally Tk 50,000.
Unable to bear the humiliation of blurting out the incident in exchange for money, the young woman went to her room and closed the door during the meeting. He tried to commit suicide by twisting the veil with a fan inside the house and hanging himself with a noose. Realizing the matter, the family members quickly broke down the door and rescued him in an unconscious state and took him to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital. When his condition deteriorated there, he was quickly shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later to the ICU of a private hospital in the capital. Accused Naim is absconding since the incident.
The victim's mother expressed her anger and said, “Naim has broken my daughter's good family. She has ruined my daughter by tempting her to marry for a year. And the price of my daughter's honor was set at 50 thousand rupees in the court (arbitration). My daughter died without being able to bear this insult.”
He complained that they did not get any justice even after filing a written complaint with the police station.
In response to the question whether criminal offenses like rape are arbitrable or not, Chinishpur Union BNP convenor Aulad Hossain Mollah, who was present at the arbitration, said, “I went there for a short time at the request of both parties. Later I heard that most of the members of the arbitration board were in favor of marriage. But the girl tried to commit suicide when someone suggested a solution with money.”
Chinishpur Union Beat Officer Md. Ishaq Mia said, he himself was not in the arbitration, but SI Md. Heard Yunus was present there. However, the accused SI Yunus denied being in the arbitration.

Dr. Narsingdi Sadar Hospital emergency department doctor. Khairul Islam said that the young woman was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state with a noose around her neck. As his trachea was damaged and his condition was very critical, he was quickly referred to Dhaka with first aid.
When asked about the incident, Narsingdi Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) MR Al Mamun said, “The information about the presence of any police member in the arbitration is not correct. We received a verbal information earlier, but no written complaint.”
