Electricity price hike will make public life more miserable: Khilafat Majlis

Khilafat Majlis strongly protested the announcement of new electricity rates by Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC). Leaders of the party said that this increase in electricity prices will make the life of common people more miserable and will put fresh pressure on commodity prices.

This information was given in a press release signed by the Central Publicity Secretary of the Khilafat Majlis, Engineer Abdul Hafiz Khosru, on Wednesday (June 3).

Ahmad Abdul Quader said that BERC has announced the new price of electricity at wholesale and consumer level. In this, the price of electricity at the wholesale level has been increased by 19.85 percent and at the consumer level from 15 to 19.94 percent. Besides, the circulation charges have been increased by 23.96 percent.

Leaders said that the increase in the price of electricity will further increase the cost of living of the common people. This will have an impact on the commodity market as well, resulting in a further increase in commodity prices.

They alleged that the longstanding corruption, mismanagement, misplanning and wastage in the power sector is being blamed on the common consumers. Such a decision is against public interest and will cause additional economic burden on the people.

In the statement, the Khilafat Majlis strongly protested the government's decision and demanded an immediate reduction in the price of electricity and fuel oil. At the same time, effective steps are called to bring the price of essential commodities within the purchasing power of the people.
