BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that BNP wants to give opportunity to all existing political parties in the country to conduct activities. He said, “BNP wants to establish a tolerant and democratic political culture in Bangladesh.”
He also said, “We want to give all political parties the opportunity to conduct their activities, express their opinions and go before the people.”
He said all this in the speech of the chief guest at the public reception in the newly formed Bhulli Upazila of Thakurgaon on Wednesday (03 June) afternoon. The Secretary General of BNP is working as the Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives in the current government.
Mirza Fakhrul said, “The responsibility of BNP leaders and workers has increased a lot now. The people of the country have trust in BNP. To retain that trust, you have to work for the people, you have to earn the love of the people. No government has been able to stay in power for long by showing torture, repression or intimidation.”
He said, “We don't want to repeat the mistakes of the past. We want to create a political environment where all parties can conduct their activities independently. The people will decide who they will support. We want Parliament to be effective and Parliament to be the focal point of all political parties.”
Addressing the BNP leaders and workers, he said, “You have to strengthen people's trust through your behavior and activities. BNP is a people's party, a working party. It will not be possible to retain that trust if it cannot fulfill people's expectations.”
Referring to the tradition of Bhulli region, he said that the people of this area have played an important role in various democratic movements and struggles. He remembered the contribution of the late and senior political leaders of the area and paid tribute to them.
Recalling the liberation war, Mirza Fakhrul said, “Many people were martyred in this region in 1971. We will never forget the history of their sacrifice.”
He further said, “During the fascist regime, BNP leaders and activists were subjected to extreme torture. Many could not sleep at night, had to hide in fear of the police. But the power of the people ultimately defeated the dictatorship.”
Regarding development, he said, besides establishing a full-fledged university, medical college and other higher education institutions in Thakurgaon, new employment opportunities should be created. He urged the youth to be proficient in technical and career-oriented education rather than limiting themselves to certificate-based education.
He said, “Youth should be developed in such a way that they can play a role in earning foreign exchange by working as skilled manpower in the country and abroad.”
Regarding industrialization, he said there is a need to establish Economic Zone (EPZ) in Thakurgaon. But before that, emphasis should be placed on developing agriculture-based industries, because agriculture is the main base of the region's economy.
Calling on the BNP leaders and activists to protect the environment, he said that a massive tree plantation program should be undertaken along the various roads of the district during the monsoon season.
District BNP president Mirza Faisal Amin, General Secretary Md. Paygam Ali, Sadar Upazila BNP President Abdul Hamid, Municipal BNP President Shariful Islam Sharif and various leaders and activists of the district and upazila.
