Fazila Khatun (47), mother of child Fatema, who was killed in a crocodile attack in a pond adjacent to the shrine of Khanjahan Ali (r.) in Bagerhat, has returned to her family after 3 and a half years of her disappearance.
Bagerhat Sadar Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Mosa handed over mentally unstable Fazila Khatun to her family members on Thursday (June 4). Atiya Khatun. At that time, Fazila Begum's mother Hajera Khatun, brother Harez Ali and Jewel Mia were present along with other family members.
The relatives of Fazila Khatun said that they identified Fazila Khatun after seeing the picture published in various media when the death of child Fatima was attacked by a crocodile in the pond of the shrine. Later, 6 members of the family left for Bagerhat from Char Kharicha village of Mymensingh Sadar Upazila on Wednesday and reached there on Thursday morning.
Fazila Khatun's mother Hajera Khatun said, “Sometime in April 2023, there was a storm. After that, Fazila left home with Fatema and did not return. She was not found even after a lot of searching. It feels good to have my daughter now. It would have been better to find her along with her granddaughter.”
“My sister went missing more than three years ago. We are happy to have her back today. However, it is very sad to remember the death of niece Fatema,” said Fazila Khatun's younger brother Mohammad Jewel Mia.
Bagerhat Sadar upazila executive officer Mosa. Atia Khatun said, “Fazila Begum's family members contacted me in the morning. Necessary documents were verified to confirm their identity. After that, she was handed over to the custody of the family in the presence of social service department officials, representatives of Bagerhat Sadar Model Police Station and media persons.”
A seven-year-old child Fatema was attacked by a crocodile when she went down to bathe at the ghat on the east side of Dighi last Monday around 8:30 pm. Later, after much search, his body was recovered around 4:30 am on Tuesday morning.
