The Chhatra Dal has been accused of attacking an event of National Citizen Party (NCP) in Rupganj Upazila of Narayanganj.
The NCP leaders alleged that the attack was carried out by a local Chhatra Dal leader on the ground of Kuliadi Government Primary School in Daudpur around 3 pm on Saturday (June 6).
At least 20 NCP leaders and workers were injured in the attack, said Nirav Raihan, organizing secretary of the party's district committee.
He said, “The upazila committee of the NCP organized a fruit festival on the occasion of the Eid reunion at the school grounds. Naseeruddin Patwari, the chief coordinator of the party, was supposed to be present as the chief guest. However, the attack took place shortly before the event began.”
According to NCP, the former senior vice-president of the district Chhatra Dal and the former convenor of the upazila Chhatra Dal, Sultan Mahmud, were attacked by his followers with indigenous weapons.
Nirav Raihan said, “We were on the way. Before the event started, they attacked on more than half a hundred motorcycles. Even though there was a police presence near the scene, the attack went on unhindered. Several of us were injured and are being treated at the hospital.”
The NCP leader alleged that on Friday night too, the same people attacked the venue and tore the cloth of the pandal.
“Then when the police and administration were informed, they assured that the program would go on smoothly. But, the attack happened again in their presence. We condemn it,” he added.
Sarwar Hossain, senior joint convener of the district committee of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, alleged that the attack was carried out around the arrival of BNP central leader Nasiruddin Patwari. The attackers were also shouting various slogans against Naseeruddin. Last night also they attacked threatening not to perform the ceremony.
Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Mehdi Islam said, “Police were deployed here since last night. Still the untoward incident took place. The police will investigate the incident properly and identify those involved and bring them under the law.”
“There will be full police security to complete the event. We have spoken to NCP people and the chief guest. They will be able to complete the event well. We have made maximum security arrangements.”
