Former MP Sujan attends his father's funeral after being released on parole


Former Member of Parliament (MP) Mazharul Islam Sujan attended the funeral of his father Dabirul after being released from Dinajpur jail on parole for seven hours.

On Saturday (May 30) morning, he left the jail for Baliadangi Upazila of Thakurgaon. Reached his residence at Baliadangir at 12:30 PM.

According to family sources, Mazharul Islam Sujan has been released on parole for seven hours to attend the funeral of Dabirul Islam, a brave freedom fighter and seven-time elected Thakurgaon-2 former Member of Parliament.

The Janaza of Dabirul Islam was held at Shaheed Akbar Ali Science and Technology College ground at 3 pm on Saturday.

Participating in the funeral, former MP Mazharul Islam Sujan said, “Dad was elected MP seven times. He worked for the development of the area for 35 years. If he has any mistakes, please forgive him. He tried to work for the people with his best in a border area.”

Dabirul Islam was born on 29 September 1948 in Barabari village of Baliadangi upazila of Thakurgaon district. He was associated with politics since his student days. Later, he was elected chairman three times in Barabari Union Parishad elections at the local government level.

At the beginning of politics, he was associated with the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB). Left CPB in 1996 and joined Bangladesh Awami League. He was elected Member of Parliament seven times from Thakurgaon-2 Constituency.

He won the 1986 Third National Parliament and the 1991 Fifth National Parliament elections as a CPB candidate. After that, he was elected member of parliament five times consecutively in the election of 1996, 2001, 2008, 2014 and 2018 on the nomination of Awami League.

During his tenure as a Member of Parliament, he was the Chairman of various Parliamentary Standing Committees. Among these, the committees related to Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Ministry of Social Welfare and Ministry of Science and Technology are notable.

In his long political career, he also served as the President of Thakurgaon District Awami League and the President of District Farmers League. His elder son Mazharul Islam Sujan was elected Member of Parliament in 2024 election.

After the change of political pot on August 5, 2024, several cases were filed against Dabirul Islam and he was arrested on October 3 of that year. He was released on bail this year after being imprisoned for a long time. Later, when he fell ill, he was taken to Dhaka for better treatment. He died while undergoing treatment there.
