It has been alleged that a child named Fatema (7) was dragged by a crocodile while taking a bath in the pond adjacent to the shrine of Hazrat Khanjahan Ali (RA) in Bagerhat.
The incident took place on Monday (June 1) around 8:30 pm at Mahila Ghat in Dighi. Fire service personnel have started operations to rescue the missing child.
According to local sources, Fatema's mother is mentally challenged. The child lived in the shrine with the mother.
Eyewitnesses said that at night the child went down to take a bath in the Dighi Ghat of the shrine. At that time, the crocodile suddenly attacked the child and dragged him into the deep water of the lake and disappeared. The people present immediately tried to rescue him but failed.
Bagerhat-2 Constituency Member of Parliament Sheikh Manjurul Haque Rahad, Deputy Commissioner Golam Md. Baten, Superintendent of Police Hasan Mohammad Nacher Rikabdar, Additional Superintendent of Police (Administrative Finance) Md. Mahidul Islam visited the spot.
Khadem Fakir Tariqul Islam of Khanjahan Ali (retd.) shrine said, “The child was attacked by a crocodile soon after getting into the water of the pond. When the fire service was informed, they quickly reached the spot and started rescue work.”
Earlier, on April 8, a dog was dragged from Dighi Ghat by a crocodile. When the video of this incident spread on social media, there was a stir across the country.
Khan Jahan released the first crocodile in the pond adjacent to the shrine of Khan Jahan Ali (RA). However, the crocodile he left behind is no more. Of the 5 crocodiles brought from Madras, India in 2005, only one remains.
