More than 640,000 raw hides have entered Dhaka's Basik Leather Industrial City in Savar in the last one week on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha. The activities of leather collection and transportation which started from the first day of Eid are still continuing.
According to the related sources, leather preservation, salting and primary processing are going on in full swing in the tanneries. Currently salted hides are entering the tannery.
In a message sent on Wednesday night (June 3) on WhatsApp, the executive engineer of the BSIC office of the leather industry city said. Mehrajul Maiyan informed this information.
He said that 6 lakh 40 thousand 430 raw hides came to Shilpanagari in 1823 trucks in seven days from 12 noon on May 28 to 11 pm on June 3. Among them there are 5 lakh 84 thousand 589 cow and buffalo skins and 55 thousand 841 goat and sheep skins.
On the surface, the industrial city can be seen, the work of unloading and storing leather from trucks is still going on in various tanneries. Workers salt the leather in preparation for preservation and processing. From the main gate of the industrial city to the inside of various factories, busyness is visible.
Mehrajul Maiyan said, “The work of storing and processing the leather coming to the industrial city is going on. To deal with the extra pressure of Eid, BSIC, Ministry of Industry and Commerce, district administration, local administration and law enforcement forces are working together. Special preparations have also been made for the transportation and management of leather.”
Officials in charge of the industrial city said that on the first day of Eid around 12:30 a car carrying the skin of the sacrificial animal entered the industrial city. After that, the number of leather trucks increased with time. Most of the rawhides that came in early were bloodstained. Upon arrival at the tannery, the workers quickly applied salt to preserve them.
Tannery people say that this is the biggest leather collection season of the year around Eid al-Adha. As a result, extra precautions have been taken in the collection, transportation and storage of skins. Although many tanneries have completed preparations in advance, large quantities of skins are being collected again after Eid.
Commerce and Industry Minister Khandaker Muktadir visited the Leather Industrial City on May 29. He visited various tanneries and discussed with the owners the current state of the industry, production processes and environmental management.
