In Sherpur's Jhenaigati Garo Pahar area, there has been an allegation of an attack on a forest guard and a forest officer for stopping illegal sand extraction and smuggling. They have been admitted to Sherpur Sadar Hospital.
The incident took place in Nakshi area of ​​the upazila around 10 pm on Wednesday (June 3). District Commissioner Farida Yasmin went to the hospital around 12 pm to inquire about the injured and assured to take legal action.
The injured are Ghazni Beat Officer Saleheen Newaz Khan and Forest Guard Ziaul Islam of Rangtia Range.
The accused are Farhad Hossain (45), son of Kashimuddin member of Thana Road area of ​​Jhenaigati upazila, his son Ruman (25), Sohag Mia (28), son of Zahurul Islam of the same area.
According to the forest department and local sources, around 5:30 am on Wednesday morning, sand was being illegally extracted and smuggled in a Mahindra vehicle from Jhenaigati Zero Point area of ​​Garo Hills. On receiving the information, BEAT officers, forest guards and members of the forest department raided the place. Meanwhile, they seized Mahindra vehicles filled with sand and arrested some traders and handed them over to the police.
Abdul Karim, deputy ranger of Rangtia range, said, “Since the morning sand was seized and handed over to the police, this gang was on the way to attack our people. We could not solve the matter. We have informed the higher officials about the attack. We will take legal action as per their instructions.”
Sherpur District Sadar Hospital Emergency Medical Officer Subhranshu Banerjee said, “Two forest department personnel have been brought to the hospital. One of them has head injuries. Their physical condition is stable.”
Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration) of Sherpur. Mizanur Rahman Bhunya said, “We have come to know that two people of the forest department were injured in Jhenaigati. They are currently admitted in Sherpur District Sadar Hospital. No written complaint has been received in this regard. If a complaint is received, action will be taken according to the law. Also, necessary action will be taken to arrest those involved in the incident.”
Farida Yasmin, Deputy Commissioner of Sherpur, said, “Criminals are destroying the life and nature of our Garo Pahar and also attacking our officials. This will not be accepted. The case is ongoing in this case. The culprits will be brought under the law soon.”
