People are returning home risking on the roof of the truck.
The holy Eid-ul-Azha is knocking on the door. Millions of people have started returning home to celebrate the festival with their loved ones. Though the highways of North Bengal have smooth traffic, due to excess fares and shortage of vehicles, many passengers are risking their lives to reach their destinations on the roof of trucks.
On Tuesday (May 26) from morning to noon, this image can be seen by visiting different areas of Sirajganj Kaddar Mor, Jamuna Setu West Roundabout and highways.
Saiful Islam, a garment worker who left for home from Gazipur, said, “I am returning home by truck after paying Tk 200 because of the extra fare on the bus. Although there is some traffic on the east side of the bridge, there is no traffic on the west side. So I can move towards the destination quickly.”
The driver of a Bogra-bound truck said, “I am returning to Bogra with an empty car after delivering cattle to the cow market. I am taking some passengers on the way.”
According to the transport drivers, the traffic is normal as the road condition is relatively good during the Eid trip. However, due to excess passenger pressure in some areas, passengers are trying to return home by alternative means.
Ayez Uddin, a long-distance bus driver, said, “There is heavy traffic on the road, but there is no long-term traffic jam. Passengers can travel comfortably. The administration's initiative is also visible.”
Hatikumrul Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ismail Hossain said, “Additional police are deployed on the highway to keep Eid Yatra smooth. If there is a traffic jam, immediate action is being taken. Drivers are being warned not to transport passengers in trucks and cargo vehicles.”
