20 Indian railway coaches are ready to arrive in Bangladesh. The coaches will be sent to Bangladesh in July this year, officials of the Indian Railways said.
In 2024, during the then Awami League regime, the government of Bangladesh signed an agreement with Rights, an export agency under the Indian Railway Department. The condition of that agreement was that India will export a total of 200 railway coaches to Bangladesh. Among these coaches are 120 broad gauge passenger coaches, 36 broad gauge locomotives and 10 meter gauge locomotives. According to the terms of the agreement, Bangladesh will pay Rs 915 crore to India as the price of these 200 coaches. European Investment Bank (EIB) has given financial assistance to Bangladesh in this project.
A senior Indian Railways official told the Economic Times, “We have completed all preparations to send 20 broad gauge coaches to Bangladesh in July as the first shipment. This shipment will be sent to Bangladesh any day in July. As per the terms of the contract, the subsequent shipments will be sent in phases over the next 36 months.”
The first batch of 20 coaches was manufactured at the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala, Punjab, India. The next coaches will also be prepared there.
