Five people, including four women, were injured by lightning in some places of Sundarganj Upazila of Gaibandha on Tuesday (June 2) afternoon.
The injured are – Atwar Rahman (50), son of deceased Babar Ali of Dahband union of the upazila, Mocha, wife of Aynal Haque of Dakshin Dhumaitari village of the same union. Zainab Begum (45), Nurunnabi Mia's wife of Subarnadah village of Ramjivan Union, was killed. Nurina Begum (25), Usha Rani (50), wife of Joy Krishna of Jarmandi village and Mocha, wife of Murad Mia of Sundarganj municipality. Sonali Begum (25).
Locals said that after a few days of hot and humid weather, there was sudden light to heavy rain in Sundarganj upazila on Tuesday afternoon. Also there are frequent lightnings. The loud sound of thunder and torrential rain instantly spread panic among the people. Those injured in lightning were quickly rescued and taken to Sundarganj Upazila Health Complex by their relatives and local residents.
Sundarganj Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Dibakar Basak said that a total of five people, including four women, came to the hospital after being injured by lightning. One of them recovered and returned home. Four people are currently under treatment. They regained consciousness. However, they have been kept under 24-hour observation. Necessary action will be taken after monitoring.
Gaibandha and Rangpur region may experience heavy rain and lightning from June 4 to June 9, according to the meteorologist of the Rangpur office of the Meteorological Department. Mostafizar Rahman.
“The public should stay indoors during lightning strikes. It is advised not to go out for 30 minutes after lightning strike,” he said.
