Discussion-criticism on 'Islam-friendly gyms' in India

The announcement to convert a fitness center in Puthunagaram, Palakkad district of Kerala, India into an 'Islam-friendly gym' has sparked controversy. NDTV Online reported the information on Thursday (June 4).

The announcement was initially made on the Instagram profile of 'Nawaz Muthu T'. It is informed that some new rules will be introduced for members in this gym which has been operating for the past 15 years.

According to the announcement, the proposed changes include a complete ban on music inside gyms, separate exercise times for men and women and a dress code. This rule requires members to ensure their 'Awrah' (parts of the body that are required to be covered according to Islamic guidelines) is covered while exercising.

Gym authorities said men and women will not be allowed to exercise together and separate schedules will be set to maintain the guidelines.

Female members must wear clothing including hijab to cover the body as per the mentioned religious rules. The management is describing the move as Kerala's first 'Islam-friendly gym'.

The announcement sparked widespread attention and heated debate on social media. In view of this, authorities have removed the original video posted on Instagram.

This incident has caused reactions in various quarters; Supporters see it as a fitness center that conforms to religious preferences, while others question the nature and scope of such separate facilities.

Details about the identity of the gym's owner and the proposed changes were not immediately clear.
