The US House of Representatives has passed a resolution aimed at halting renewed military action against Iran and limiting President Donald Trump's war-making powers.
Some Republicans joined Democrats in voting in favor of the proposal on Wednesday (June 4). Although it is unlikely to become law, it is seen as a rare and significant political message against Trump's Iran policy.
The new bill passed with a total of 215 votes, after Republican members voted in favor of Democrats. On the other hand, 208 votes were cast against the bill.
While the proposal is unlikely to eventually become law, it is seen as a clear political message against Trump. This ongoing conflict will reach 100 days on Saturday since the decision to join the attack against Iran jointly with Israel on February 28.
Trump did not seek congressional approval before launching the war. Instead, he tried to describe the conflict as a 'small conflict' or a 'short-term campaign'.
Trump's repeated unilateral decisions to use military force abroad have fueled discontent among some members of Congress. Congress has the sole power to declare war under the US Constitution.
This is the fourth attempt in the House of Representatives to curtail the US president's ability to go to war. However, even if the bill passes, it will still need to be approved by the US Senate, which is currently controlled by Republicans.
