Four days after the devastating twin earthquakes in Venezuela, around 1,500 bodies have so far been recovered from the ruins of the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, and La Guaira. The Acting President of the South American country, Delsey Rodríguez, gave this information in a statement yesterday
Our search and rescue operations are continuing in the rubble. Today (Sunday) as the dead bodies trapped in the rubble have been recovered, the survivors are also being rescued. Our campaign is not ending soon. “We have to move forward with the hope that our relatives are alive under the rubble,” Delsi said in a statement.
On Wednesday, June 24, at 6:04 PM local time in Venezuela, a pair of earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela. The time interval between the two earthquakes was only 40 seconds, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said in a statement.
Wednesday’s earthquake is considered to be the worst, most devastating and deadliest in Venezuela’s history. Many buildings and houses of the country have been partially or completely destroyed in this pair of earthquakes. The USGS said the total death toll from the earthquake could exceed 100,000. Earlier, the Speaker of the Venezuelan Parliament, Jorge Rodriguez, said that 1,450 bodies and 3,150 injured people have been recovered from the rubble of various buildings. George also said that 774 buildings have collapsed in Venezuela so far due to the earthquake.
