Tuesday is the third death anniversary of Sirajul Alam Khan, one of the organizers of Bangladesh’s freedom struggle, founder of Swadhin Bangla Nucleus and BLF. He died on June 9, 2023. On the occasion of his death anniversary, his family, various groups and organizations including Sirajul Alam Khan Smriti Parishad have undertaken various programs including tributes and memorial meetings.
Sirajul Alam Khan was born on January 6, 1941 in Alipur village of Begumganj upazila of Noakhali. He was expelled for taking part in the ‘Convocation Movement’ during his Masters in Mathematics Department of Dhaka University. He was elected General Secretary of Chhatra League in 1963. He was the main initiator of the secret political organization ‘Nucleus’ (Independent Bangla Biplappi Parishad) which was formed in 1962 within the Chhatra League.
From 1962 to 1971, he played an important role in the student movement, the six-point movement, the involvement of students and workers in the popular uprising of 1979, the movement to withdraw the Agartala conspiracy case, the formulation of the 11-point movement plan and strategy, the absolute victory of the Awami League in the 1970s elections and the liberation war. The political wing of the nucleus, the Bangladesh Liberation Force or Mujib Bahini (BLF), and the military unit ‘Joy Bangla Bahini’ were formed.
At the end of the liberation war, Sirajul Alam Khan had a disagreement with Awami League and Bangabandhu on the question of forming a revolutionary national government. As a result of his decisions and activities, the first opposition political party of the independent country, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSAD) was formed. His theoretical innovations in socio-economic analysis made him known as a ‘political theorist’ at home and abroad.
