The former mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation was released after more than one year of imprisonment. Selina Hyatt Ivy.
He returned to his residence after being released from prison around 10 pm on Wednesday. Since then, a crowd of party leaders, well-wishers and local residents has been noticed at his residence. The police have arranged additional surveillance to ensure the personal security of the three-time former mayor and to monitor whether he is involved in any program of the banned Awami League.
Ivy was arrested in a total of 12 cases including murder and attempted murder cases filed against the anti-discrimination student movement and was in prison for about 13 months. After being released from Kashimpur Central Women’s Jail in Gazipur on Wednesday night, she reached her ancestral residence ‘Chunka Cottage’ in Deobogh area of Narayanganj around 12:30 pm. Highlighting the experience of prison life there, Ivy said that during the interim government, he did not get a chance to meet anyone except his close relatives. He could not meet because of the case against his younger brother. Since husband and two sons are staying abroad, they have not met them either. He said that he was more mentally broken due to the death of another brother a year ago.
District Police Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Tarek Al Mehdi said, as a former mayor, it is the responsibility of the police to ensure his safety. Along with this, necessary surveillance is continued to keep the law and order situation normal.
He also said that there is a plan to install about 2000 CC cameras in Narayanganj in order to control crime. Cameras installed in front of Ivy’s house are also part of that plan.
On the other hand, local residents and supporters from different areas of Narayanganj came to see him from Thursday morning. They inquired about his physical condition and wished him well. Freedom fighter Abdul Aziz, a resident of Ambagan area of Narayanganj city, said that I came to see him even in his old age after getting the news of Ivy’s release. He claimed that Ivy’s contribution to the development of Narayanganj is significant and it will not be easy for anyone else to develop like him. Zaheer Uddin, a local resident, said that I pray for Ivy’s health while in prison after praying five times a day.
According to the locals, especially politically aware people, Ivy’s return is not just a release from prison, but is seen as a new indication of Awami League’s politics in the future.
