Is it dangerous to eat rotten mangoes?


The sweet aroma of ripe mangoes floats in the hot air of Jaishtha. A glass of cold mango juice is a favorite of many during this hot season. However, experts warn that juice made from rotting, insect-infested or fungus-infected mangoes can pose a health risk.

According to doctors, it is not the only problem when insects are found inside the fruit. Rather, it indicates that the fruit has rotted or been in an environment where bacteria and fungi can easily grow. As a result, eating that fruit or drinking its juice can cause various health complications including food poisoning.

Bengaluru KIMS Hospital gastroenterologist Dr. Deepak Ganga p. Said, “Symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, abdominal cramps, hollowness and weakness may appear after eating contaminated fruit. In many cases, the body reacts to expel harmful substances.”

According to experts, not only bacteria but also fungi can grow in rotting fruits. Some fungi also produce toxic substances, which are harmful to the body. So even if you see a little fungus or rot on the fruit, it should not be eaten.

Children, the elderly, pregnant women, cancer patients, organ transplant recipients, and people with weakened immune systems are most at risk from eating such fruits. In them, diarrhea and vomiting can quickly lead to dehydration, infection and other complications.

Many people think that turning fruit into juice or pulp makes it safe. But experts say harmful germs can remain even after the contaminated fruit is processed. So juices made from spoiled fruits can also pose health risks.

To protect yourself, experts recommend checking fruit thoroughly before buying, washing it in clean water and avoiding rotten, excessively soft, smelly or insect-infested fruit.
