Volatility in onion prices Amar Bangla BANGLADESH

Due to the continuous rains, there has been an upward trend in the market of daily necessities in different parts of the country. The price of onion has increased the most. The price of this product has increased by Tk 15 to Tk 20 per kg in a span of just a few days, which has created additional cost pressure on the consumers.

On Saturday (July 25), a few raw markets in Malibagh and Rampura areas of the capital showed the increase in onion prices.

Onions of good quality are being sold in the market at Tk 60 per kg, which was Tk 40 three-four days ago. On the other hand, the price of medium quality or relatively small sized onion has increased from Tk 50 to Tk 55.

Wholesale and retail traders are blaming supply shortage due to floods and continuous rains in various areas behind this increase in onion prices. They claim that there is serious disruption in onion transportation from Mokam to Dhaka. In many areas, onions are rotting due to water logging in warehouses.

Abdul Hakim, a vendor at the Malibagh Railway Gate raw market, said that onions mainly come to Dhaka from North Bengal, Faridpur and Kushtia. But due to the incessant rains of the last few days, the price of onion has gone up in Mokamei. We have to buy at a higher price, so we are forced to sell at a higher price than before.

Julhas, a buyer who came to the market, said that he bought onions for Tk 40 per kg last week. Now I bought 20 taka more. The price of every thing has gone up, such a sudden increase in price is becoming difficult for us.
