Dhaka has made a formal request to the Indian government to send back former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who was sentenced to death for crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising, to Bangladesh. For this purpose, a diplomatic letter has been sent to Delhi through the Ministry of External Affairs.
A source related to the International Criminal Tribunal confirmed the matter to the media on Monday (July 20).
According to sources, a certified copy of the death penalty verdict of Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal by the International Criminal Tribunal has also been attached to the letter sent to the Government of India recently.
Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and then Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun were accused in the case filed for crimes against humanity committed during the July-August mass uprising.
After a long judicial process, the International Criminal Tribunal-1 announced its verdict on November 17, 2025. Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal were found guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death. The tribunal noted that they are responsible for the actions of the security forces under the principle of ‘superior command responsibility’.
The 453-page full judgment published later also ordered the confiscation of state-owned properties of Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
