A US citizen has been detained by the Armed Border Force (SSB) of India for allegedly staying in India for 9 months without a passport-visa or valid documents. Jordan Brown was arrested while illegally entering Nepal through the border of Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district.
Members of SSB’s 22nd Battalion arrested him from Mainiwa area last Saturday.
However, he could not produce any passport-visa or any document required for stay in India, no such document was found even after searching him. However, after the search, 2 mobile phones and cash of 31 thousand 460 rupees were found from him.
During initial questioning, Brown said he traveled to Thailand on a tourist visa in 2025; He lost his passport there. He then traveled by sea from Thailand to Sri Lanka and from Sri Lanka arrived in the western Indian state of Goa on November 2, where he remained until then.
Brown recently came to Maharajganj in Uttar Pradesh from Goa via Bangalore. He came here to cross the border without documents.
Maharajganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Siddharth told Indian media NDTV, “This person said that he came to Goa on November 2, 2025. Therefore, he has been staying in India for almost 9 months now without any valid documents.”
Brown has not yet been able to give an answer as to why he stayed in India for a long time without any valid documents. According to the police, he gave different statements during interrogation.
Uttar Pradesh Police said that an investigation has already started to look into Brown’s case.
Note that India’s Bangladesh and Pakistan border is guarded by the BSF, Nepal and Bhutan are guarded by the Armed Border Force or SSB, and China and Ladakh are guarded by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police or ITBP.
