In a warning message on Sunday (July 5), NBR said that recently a group of fraudsters have been contacting taxpayers from various mobile numbers claiming to have audited their tax files. They are illegally demanding money and trying to extort money with the promise of exemption from audit or fear of legal complications.
No communication without written notice
NBR has clearly stated that if tax records are selected for audit, it is communicated to the taxpayer concerned only through formal written notice in due process. No officer or employee of the National Board of Revenue shall communicate such matters through personal mobile numbers or through unauthorized channels.
Caution in financial transactions
Any outstanding taxes or fees related to taxes should be deposited into the state treasury only through government challans, the warning said. No officer or person is authorized to receive money personally, or through any mobile banking service including Bikash, Rocket, Cash or personal bank account.
Verify information
NBR has advised taxpayers not to get confused if they receive any such suspicious phone calls, SMS or e-mails and immediately contact the office of the Deputy Tax Commissioner of the concerned tax zone to verify the authenticity of the information.
The National Board of Revenue said it is committed to ensuring hassle-free, transparent and accountable services to taxpayers. Hence a special request has been made to the tax payers not to enter into any financial transaction under any circumstances succumbing to the lure or fear of fraudsters.
