Special tax exemption for filing returns by September


The National Board of Revenue has started online submission of income tax returns for the current tax year 2026-27. Taxpayers will get a rebate of up to 5 percent of the net tax payable if they file their returns by next September, but the maximum limit of this rebate is Rs. 25,000.


An NBR press release informed that online return filing for individual tax payers has been launched from Wednesday (July 22) to make tax service easier, faster and transparent. After its introduction in 2021, this system has become very popular with taxpayers; About 4.7 lakh individual taxpayers filed their returns through the 2025-26 tax year, reflecting the growing interest in the online system.


According to NBR, online filing of returns has been made mandatory for all tax payers belonging to natural persons category. However, senior taxpayers aged 65 years and above, certified physically challenged or persons with special needs, Bangladeshis residing abroad, representatives of deceased taxpayers and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh can submit paper returns if they wish. Besides, if there is a problem in the online registration, there will be an opportunity to file the return on paper with the permission of the concerned tax officer.


Tax payers can pay their taxes at home through bank transfer, debit-credit card and mobile financial services like Bikash, Rocket, Cash and will get receipt and income tax certificate immediately after submitting the return with correct information. NBR has also informed that in case of problems in online submission, assistance will be available through call center and other means during office hours.


The agency also said that if returns are filed between July and September, 5 percent of the net tax payable or up to a maximum of 25,000 rupees will be exempted, but returns submitted after September will not get this benefit and if filed after December, additional tax will be charged.
