Eight people were killed in Moscow and Tambov regions of Russia in a Ukrainian drone attack. After the attack, several large warehouses caught fire and thick black smoke could be seen in the sky for a long time.
Ukraine has recently increased its attacks on Russian territory. Kiev claims that these counter-operations are being carried out as a response to Russia’s long-standing attack.
Ukraine described the strikes as a ‘long-range sanctions’. Earlier, the country had mainly targeted Russian oil infrastructure. This has created pressure on the country’s energy supply system.
This time, Ukraine is claimed to have attacked two key warehouses of Wildberry, one of Russia’s largest online retailers. Eight night shift workers were killed and the warehouses were badly damaged.
“This is a terrible night for our company and our country,” said Tatiana Kim, chief executive officer of WildBerries. This pain cannot be expressed in words.’
Smoke and damage in Moscow
Thick black smoke was seen in the sky over Moscow on Saturday morning, which reportedly lasted until the afternoon.
Yevgeny Parvishov, governor of the Tambov region, about 500 kilometers southeast of Moscow, said an enemy drone attack killed seven night shift workers at a Wildberry logistics center.
An oil depot and another Wildberry warehouse in the Moscow region were also attacked, regional governor Andrei Vorobyov said. He said that one died while undergoing treatment in the hospital.
Local authorities said the fire was being extinguished in the electrostal area of the Moscow region. The fire in Tambov region was brought under control later. An empty kindergarten in Electrostal was also damaged, but no one was injured.
About 60 people were injured and taken to hospital in the attacks in the two regions, authorities said.
Hundreds of drone strikes towards Moscow
More than 370 drones were sent towards the Moscow region during the night, according to Sergei Sobyanin, the mayor of the Russian capital, Moscow.
He also said that from July 11 to July 18, about 1,892 Ukrainian drones flying towards Moscow were intercepted.
