The missile attack on two oil tankers of the United Arab Emirates near the Strait of Hormuz has sparked renewed tension in the Middle East. An Indian sailor was killed and eight others injured after an attack in the Southern Channel near Omani waters. In the early morning incident on Tuesday (July 14), two tankers caught fire, but it was later brought under control, the UAE Ministry of Defense said. Strongly condemning the incident, the UAE Ministry of Defense said the attack was a clear violation of international law and a serious threat to regional security and stability. At the same time, it has been mentioned that the country reserves the right to take all necessary steps to protect its sovereignty and national interests. Meanwhile, UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said it received a report from the master of a tanker about an unknown object hitting the right side engine room about 40 nautical miles northeast of the Kalhat coast of Oman. The UKMTO said the incident is under investigation. Also, all commercial vessels plying the waterway have been advised to exercise utmost caution and report any suspicious activity to the authorities immediately. According to analysts, the attack comes at a time when military tensions between the US and Iran have escalated. The security situation around the vital Middle East shipping route has become a cause for renewed concern after the US conducted airstrikes against Iranian targets for the third day in a row.
